Lab Engineers - Architecture & Civil Engineering Departments

Job Summary

The American University of Ras Al Khaimah (AURAK) is seeking candidates for two Lab Engineer positions; one in Architecture and another in Civil & Infrastructure Engineering.

Civil Engineering

The Civil and Infrastructure Engineering Department at the American University of Ras Al Khaimah (AURAK) is seeking a Laboratory Engineer to join the department. Candidates must have a BSc degree in Civil Engineering or in a closely related field. Candidates must demonstrate ability or potential for excellence in supporting teaching of and in performing lab experiments in concrete mixing and testing, asphalt design and testing, soil mechanics, fluid mechanics and hydraulics, and surveying.

Primary responsibilities include

• Supporting teaching and conducting experiments in civil engineering laboratories.
• Development of experiments and tests in civil engineering labs.
• Coordination and preparation of lab experiments including calibrating and setting up lab equipment, dispensing tools, and materials to students, and regulating student access to manuals and data books.
• Inspection, maintenance and preparation of purchase orders of lab equipment.
• Contribution to the formulation and modification of administrative and technical procedures adopted in the laboratories, and ensures such procedures are followed.
• Maintaining and updating a database on equipment catalogs, manuals, data books, protocols of experiments.
• Ensuring observance of fire and safety regulations and the practice of good housekeeping.
• Supporting faculty in conducting research.
• Supporting students in their senior design projects and undergraduate research studies.
• Participation in departmental, school, and university committees, and in outreach activities.

Education & Experience

• Minimum qualification includes a BSc degree in Civil Engineering or in a closely related field from an accredited institution.
• Effective oral and written English communication skills.
• Interest and experience working effectively with a diverse student population.
• Ability and willingness to work collaboratively with faculty from a variety of disciplines.

Architecture

The American University of Ras Al Khaimah (UAE)/Architecture Department is currently seeking a Laboratory Engineer. Candidates for this position must have a diploma/BSc degree in Digital Fabrication or a closely related field. Candidate must have a demonstrated ability or potential for excellence in working and/or teaching in digital fabrication labs.

The Department of Architecture at the American University of Ras Al Khaimah offers a five-year Bachelor of Architecture. The primary responsibility of the digital lab engineer is to run the digital architecture studio equipped with PC, printers, plotters and laser cutter. This involves collaborating with students and faculty to ensure their work is produced to the highest standards, as well as advising faculty and students on digital printing, graphic applications, file preparation, 3D modeling and output issues for classes and individual projects. This position is responsible for operating plotters, 3D prototyping and cutting devices.

Primary responsibilities include

• Operate, and manage plotters, 3D printing and laser cutting capabilities for the Architecture Digital Lab. Ensure the proper functioning of the Lab printers and devices by providing or scheduling repair and maintenance.
• Aid in the production of promotional materials, including blog articles, brochures, posters, websites, etc. Produce educational handouts and information sheets on printing issues for distribution to students, faculty and staff.
• Provide day-to-day management of supplies, materials, and equipment.
• Develop and test machinery and equipment and be able to inspect and maintain them.
• Prepare layouts of machinery and equipment.
• Participation in departmental, school, and university committees.
• Performs supervisory functions and Schedules the lab sessions as established by management for this job.
• Coordinates the preparation of appropriate work areas for students, sets up the required tools, equipment, materials, and protocols of experiments and tests and calibrates equipment to ensure proper functioning.
• Participates with faculty members and students carrying out research work by contributing technical knowledge to the design, upgrade, and revision of experiments.
• Performs other related duties such as maintaining and updating a data base on equipment catalogs, manuals, data books, protocols of experiments, ensuring observance by subordinates of fire and safety regulations and the practice of good housekeeping, salvaging tools and materials where possible, etc.

Education & Experience

• Minimum qualification includes a diploma/BSc degree from an accredited institution.

• Ability and willingness to work collaboratively with faculty from a variety of disciplines.
• University teaching and running digital fabrication laboratories experience.
• Knowledge of plotters, 3D printing and laser cutting machines.
• Basic knowledge of 3D Architecture software (BIM, Rhino).
• Experience with graphic applications, graphic design, 3D prototyping and scanning, and/or architectural or object design.
