Research Scientist in the Division of Science (Biology) - Dr. John Burt
New York University
The Mubadala Arabian Center for Climate and Environmental Sciences (ACCESS) at New York University Abu Dhabi (NYUAD) invites applications for a Research Scientist in Physical Oceanography to develop an internationally recognized research program focused on hydrodynamic modeling and the physical processes that drive ecological, environmental, and biogeochemical dynamics in the Persian/Arabian Gulf.
The successful candidate will join a highly interdisciplinary team of oceanographers, climate scientists, marine ecologists, atmospheric modelers, environmental engineers, and data scientists working to advance understanding of environmental change in one of the world's most extreme marine environments. The position offers a unique opportunity to leverage extensive observational datasets and state-of-the-art monitoring infrastructure while contributing to the scientific mission of one of the region's leading environmental research centers. Terms of employment include a highly competitive salary and benefits package.
Research within ACCESS focuses on understanding the processes shaping marine and coastal ecosystems across the UAE and the broader Arabian Gulf region. The Center maintains an extensive environmental observing network that includes underwater physicochemical monitoring stations, offshore oceanographic moorings, research buoys, meteorological monitoring systems, Acoustic Doppler Current Profilers (ADCPs), and regional-scale oceanographic and environmental datasets. These resources provide an exceptional platform for advancing understanding of circulation patterns, water mass dynamics, ecosystem connectivity, hypoxia development, environmental forecasting, and climate-driven change.
The Research Scientist will develop and lead research investigating hydrodynamics as a key driver of ecological, environmental, and biogeochemical processes. Areas of research may include coral larval dispersal and connectivity, mesoscale circulation patterns, thermohaline dynamics, transport and mixing processes, nutrient cycling, hypoxia formation, coastal oceanography, and ecosystem responses to environmental change. The successful candidate will be expected to integrate observational and modeling approaches to address fundamental scientific questions relevant to the Arabian Gulf and comparable marine environments globally.
Responsibilities will include developing and implementing hydrodynamic modeling frameworks, conducting model validation and data assimilation activities, designing and participating in field-based oceanographic research, analyzing large environmental datasets, contributing to interdisciplinary research initiatives, publishing findings in leading scientific journals, and presenting research outcomes at national and international conferences. The candidate will also contribute to proposal development, external collaborations, student mentorship, and the broader research mission of ACCESS and NYU Abu Dhabi.
The successful candidate will work closely with researchers across multiple NYUAD centers and programs, including Mubadala ACCESS, while engaging with government agencies, environmental stakeholders, and international collaborators. The position provides significant opportunities to contribute to research with direct relevance to environmental management, marine conservation, climate adaptation, and sustainable development in the UAE and the wider region.
Candidates must hold a PhD in Physical Oceanography, Ocean Modeling, Marine Science, Environmental Fluid Dynamics, Coastal Engineering, or a closely related discipline, with at least 6 years of relevant experience in their field (not including the years obtaining the PhD or equivalent terminal degree) along with extensive research and publication in well-known journals and conference papers or similar research accomplishments. Applicants should demonstrate expertise in hydrodynamic modeling and numerical simulation of marine systems, along with experience in data assimilation, model validation, and environmental data analysis.
The ideal candidate will possess a strong record of peer-reviewed publications, experience integrating observational and modeling approaches, and the ability to work effectively within multidisciplinary research teams. Experience with ADCP instrumentation, oceanographic fieldwork, environmental monitoring systems, MATLAB and/or Python, and the analysis of oceanographic datasets is highly desirable. Prior research experience in the Persian/Arabian Gulf or other environmentally extreme marine systems will be considered an advantage.
Applications will be accepted immediately. To be considered, all applicants must submit a cover letter, curriculum vitae, transcript of degree/ copy of highest degree, research statement, and at least 2 contact references, all in PDF format.
