Job Summary
The Technology Manager is responsible for the Company's engineering and technology function for filament-wound FRP/composite pressure vessels and related products used in Reverse Osmosis (RO) and water-treatment applications. The role provides technical direction for product design, development, qualification, manufacturing technology and continuous improvement.
Reporting to the Managing Director, the Technology Manager directly leads the Technologists, Design Engineers and Quality Engineers, and is accountable for technical decisions, team performance, controlled engineering outputs and delivery of agreed technology objectives.
Key Responsibilities
Technology Leadership and Planning
- Set technical priorities and maintain a technology roadmap aligned with approved product plans, business objectives, resources and budgets.
- Lead technical decisions on products, materials, manufacturing processes and equipment, balancing product performance, safety, manufacturability, reliability and cost.
- Establish appropriate design-review, verification, qualification and controlled-release stages; document significant decisions and obtain approvals within delegated authority.
- Identify significant technical and product-safety risks, determine mitigation measures, and escalate decisions beyond delegated authority to the Managing Director.
- Direct development of new FRP pressure vessels and improvements to existing products from approved requirements through prototype validation, qualification and production introduction.
- Review critical engineering outputs, including design calculations, composite laminate concepts, winding patterns, material selection, component interfaces, drawings, specifications and bills of materials.
- Oversee design verification, CAD/CAE and finite-element analysis, and controlled preparation of winding programs (Cadfil or equivalent), ensuring independent technical review appropriate to the risks.
- Approve or recommend validation and qualification plans and acceptance criteria, including applicable hydrostatic, burst, pressure-cycling, dimensional and performance tests; assess test evidence and investigate failures.
- Ensure engineering changes (ECN/ECO), material substitutions and design revisions receive appropriate technical assessment, verification, authorization and document control before implementation.
- Provide technical leadership for filament winding, fiber and resin processing, curing, extraction, machining, bonding, assembly and related FRP pressure-vessel processes.
- Ensure the Senior Technologist develops and validates process parameters, operating limits, manufacturing instructions, production trials and technical training material.
- Oversee improvements to mandrels, tooling, fixtures, production machinery, CNC programs and automation, including technical specifications and process validation.
- Use process and test data to prioritize improvement of first-pass yield, repeatability, scrap, rework, cycle time, manufacturing cost and product reliability.
- Direct investigations into recurring process deviations, material problems and product failures; verify that technical corrective actions are effective.
- Provide managerial oversight of the Quality Engineer, ensuring suitable inspection/test plans, laboratory and measurement capability, calibration control, product traceability and quality records.
- Review significant nonconformities, failed tests, qualification evidence and customer-related technical issues, ensuring structured investigation and appropriate corrective actions.
- Ensure applicable product requirements and standards, including ASME Section X and relevant ASTM, ISO or other requirements where applicable, are identified and supported by documented evidence for qualification and certification.
- Respect the Quality Engineer's inspection, hold, rejection and quality sign-off authority. Product release, concessions and deviations must follow the current approved Quality Management System (QMS) and documented delegation of authority.
- Provide an unobstructed escalation route to the Managing Director for unresolved serious quality or product-safety concerns.
- Directly manage the Senior Technologist, Design Engineer and Quality Engineer, setting responsibilities, objectives, technical priorities, performance expectations and development plans.
- Delegate assigned product/process development leadership to the Senior Technologist and detailed design execution to the Design Engineer while retaining overall technical accountability and final delegated approvals.
- Develop technical competencies, review the quality of engineering work, encourage documented problem-solving and ensure continuity of critical technical knowledge.
- Plan and monitor approved technical projects, budgets, milestones, resources and risks, and present timely recommendations or decisions to the Managing Director.
- Coordinate the technical information and handovers necessary to implement approved designs and process changes.
- Report product-development progress, qualification status, technical risks, departmental performance and results of improvement initiatives.
- Ensure design, pressure testing, process development and equipment modifications incorporate relevant technical risk assessment and safe engineering practices.
- Require prompt containment and escalation of suspected design defects, unsafe tests, loss of traceability or failed qualification; initiate holds or suspension of activities in accordance with Company procedures and delegated authority.
Education and Professional Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Materials, Polymer, Chemical, Manufacturing or related engineering; advanced or specialist composites training is an advantage.
- Minimum 10 years of progressive engineering experience, preferably 12-18 years for this scope, including at least five years in senior technical leadership, engineering management or multidisciplinary project leadership.
- Strong practical experience in FRP/composite manufacturing and filament winding; experience in pressure vessels or similar pressure-containing products is highly preferred.
- Demonstrated delivery of new-product development, validation, qualification, manufacturing introduction and process-improvement projects.
- Experience supervising engineers, managing technical projects and budgets, controlling engineering changes and resolving complex product or process issues.
- Strong command of composite materials, resin systems, fiber reinforcement, winding parameters, curing, laminate behavior, manufacturing defects and process controls.
- Sound knowledge of pressure-vessel engineering, mechanical calculations, CAD/CAE and FEA review, filament-winding programming, test methods and design for manufacture.
- Working knowledge of applicable ASME Section X, ASTM, ISO and other product/market standards, together with qualification and certification processes relevant to the portfolio.
- Familiarity with ISO 9001, inspection and test planning, root-cause analysis, NCR/CAPA, material traceability and controlled document/release practices.
- Strong technical judgment, planning, communication, analytical problem-solving, business-case preparation and team-leadership skills; fluent professional English.
- Set technical priorities, allocate work and approve or recommend designs, process specifications, test plans, engineering changes and technical investments within written delegated authority.
- Initiate technical investigations and engineering holds, seek suspension of unsafe activities under Company procedures, and escalate material risks to the Managing Director.
- Do not waive required inspection or testing, override documented quality holds, or authorize release of nonconforming pressure vessels outside the approved QMS and delegation-of-authority process.
- The Managing Director will assess performance against agreed objectives, targets and evidence. Measures may include:
- Achievement of approved product-development, validation, qualification and technology milestones.
- Accuracy, completeness and timely control of designs, engineering changes, specifications, winding programs and technical records.
- Demonstrable gains in process capability, first-pass yield, reliability, scrap, rework or cost from approved technical improvements.
- Effective closure of significant technical nonconformities and prevention of recurrent product or process failures.
- Development and performance of Technologist(s), Design Engineer(s) and Quality Engineer(s).
