Senior Technical Author

About the Role:

We are seeking a skilled and detail-oriented Senior Technical Author to join our team. In this role, you will be responsible for preparing and managing technical documentation for a range of complex systems, ensuring all publications meet the highest standards of quality and accuracy. You will work closely with engineers, development teams, and clients to gather, interpret, and present technical information in a clear and accessible format. You will also manage the publication lifecycle, from initial creation through to final release.

Key Responsibilities:

• Study project ILS proposals and prepare budgets and schedules for the development of technical publications.
• Interpret system Product Breakdown Structures (PBS) and Bills of Materials (BOM) to create publication data modules.
• Create publication specifications for Operator, Maintenance, and Support publications, and present them for review at guidance conferences with clients.
• Study Operations Analysis and Logistics Support Analysis Records to generate baselines for technical publication scope requirements.
• Interact with development engineers, production, and maintenance personnel to solicit and verify technical information.
• Source data and information for technical publications, including OEM information and photos.
• Utilize company design systems to access models and extract images for inclusion in publications.
• Format, annotate, and edit extracted images for integration into technical documents.
• Attend product tests, evaluations, and production line visits to familiarize yourself with system operations.
• Work with training system developers to identify requirements for training-related publications.
• Compile, proofread, and edit technical and training publications.
• Arrange and conduct reviews of publications with internal stakeholders and compile Observation and Action Registers.
• Coordinate publication reviews with client personnel, incorporating feedback and implementing changes from review sessions.
• Perform validation of publications during ILS validation exercises and update documentation with observations.
• Ensure timely release of final publications and maintain them according to established Engineering Change Procedures.
  
  

Key Competencies:

• ILS Development Process: In-depth understanding of ILS development in line with MIL-STD-1388.
• S1000D: Strong knowledge of the S1000D International Specification for Technical Publications.
• Technical Tools: Proficiency in XML Editor, CSS, and HTML.
• Software: Expertise with Adobe FrameMaker and technical drawing tools such as Creo.
• Technical Photography: Experience with publications-quality photography.
• Project Management: Ability to manage and prioritize multiple publication tasks and meet deadlines.
  
  

Qualifications:

• Essential:
• Minimum of 15 years of relevant work experience.
• Technical qualification in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering (4 years minimum) or equivalent.
• Preferred:
• Additional qualifications in Technical Authoring or Technical Illustrating.
