Job Description

Parsons is seeking a highly experienced and skilled Tunnel Design Expert to join our team for a prestigious rail infrastructure project in Abu Dhabi. In this role, you will lead and oversee the design aspects of tunnel structures and underground works, ensuring compliance with project requirements, international standards, and safety regulations. With a strong background in rail projects and over 15 years of experience, you will play a pivotal role in delivering innovative and efficient tunnel designs for this landmark project.

What You'll Be Doing

• Lead the design and engineering of tunnels, underground structures, and associated works for rail projects.
• Develop and review detailed tunnel design plans, specifications, and calculations to ensure compliance with project requirements and international standards.
• Perform geotechnical analysis and collaborate with geotechnical engineers to assess ground conditions and optimize tunnel design solutions.
• Provide technical expertise in the design of TBM tunnels, including alignment, cross-sections, and structural elements.
• Evaluate and mitigate risks associated with tunnel design, including settlement, groundwater ingress, and structural stability.
• Ensure designs account for safety considerations, particularly for tunnels under main roads, near adjacent buildings, and in critical zones.
• Review and approve design proposals, shop drawings, and method statements submitted by contractors.
• Provide technical support during construction, resolving design-related issues and ensuring adherence to specifications.
• Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, including structural, geotechnical, and construction engineers, to ensure seamless integration of design and construction activities.
• Conduct value engineering to optimize tunnel designs while maintaining project quality and cost-effectiveness.
• Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations related to tunnel design and rail infrastructure projects.
• Prepare and present technical reports, design documentation, and progress updates to stakeholders.
• Oversee the preparation of as-built documentation and ensure the proper handover of tunnel designs to service authorities.
• Stay updated on advancements in tunneling technologies, materials, and design methodologies to incorporate innovative solutions into projects.
  
  
  

What Required Skills You'll Bring

• Bachelor’s degree in Civil or Structural Engineering from an accredited university (Master’s degree preferred).
• Minimum of 15 years of experience in tunnel design and engineering, with a focus on rail infrastructure projects.
• Expertise in Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) design considerations and tunneling methods.
• Strong understanding of geotechnical engineering principles and their application to tunnel design.
• Proficiency in tunnel design software (e.g., PLAXIS, FLAC, MIDAS, AutoCAD, and BIM tools).
• Knowledge of materials used in tunnel construction, such as concrete, steel, and shotcrete.
• Experience in reviewing and approving material submissions, technical reports, and design documentation.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English, with strong technical writing capabilities.
• Proven ability to manage and coordinate multidisciplinary teams for complex infrastructure projects.
